There is little that is as important as good communication when planning a photo shoot. To that end, this page will help you understand the vocabulary used by most professional photographers to distinguish between different types of photos. This is particularly important because in many cases the time and effort required to create each of these types of images can vary greatly.

There are of course other types of photography, and there can certainly be overlap, but using this vocabulary will facilitate good communication and benefit everybody involved.

There are three basic formats, Horizontal (sometimes called Landscape), Vertical (sometimes called Portrait), and Square. These refer the the shape of the image, not the content of the image. Since all cameras capture in only one shape (square or rectangle), it is important to establish what the final crop will be for the best possible image.

Images that are very long and horizontal are often called Panoramics.

These images would simply be Tall Vertical images. They aren't a very commonly needed format.

These images are all Portraits.

These images are Corporate Headshots. When done as a group, they are usually done with basically the same setup for the entire run. Each of the following three rows represent work done for one company on one day.

Environmental Headshots add just a touch of the environment, but are still abstract enough to be shot in the same basic way as a Corporate Headshot. Shooting different Environmental Headshots for each person takes significantly more time than shooting everybody with the same background.

A Creative Corporate Headshot involves shooting a single setup and working to get a more dynamic image.

These photos are created one by one and include the environment as a primary part of the image. All of these are Environmental Portraits. (The top three rows of images might be tight, but they are not considered Headshots.)

These are all examples of Studio Portraits. They were all shot either in an actual photo studio, or by setting up a background on location.

A Group Portrait is a Portrait that has more than one person in it who shares the focus of the image. The number of people can effect the complexity and difficulty this kind of photography to a large degree, and is important to establish as closely as possible when discussing the photography.

lifestyle image

Lifestyle photography refers to situations that look as though they were captured from real life, rather than created by the photographer. The subjects appear to be unaware of the camera in most cases.

The complexity of a Lifestyle image can vary greatly, these images are Reportage Lifestyle. That means that a simple situation was created with the goal of getting a good set of images, and the photography was improvised. The results are good, but it isn't about getting a specifically composed and planned shot. This group includes images for both advertising and corporate applications. These images are usually shot without a tripod.

This Lifestyle photography is Set-Up Lifestyle photography. The composition and interaction was planned. The camera is generally locked down on a tripod, and all of the images taken are usually highly similar.
